Switched off, the tubing on a standard sign is frosted white, whatever color it glows when lit. A hot pink sign is white when it is off.
What varies is the board behind it. Clear acrylic all but disappears. A mirror or brushed board stays an object on the wall. Since a sign is unlit for most of the hours it hangs there, that is the decision worth making on purpose.
Why the tubing is white and not the color it glows
The silicone we bend is white because white is the most translucent material available. Light passes through it with the least loss, so the sign is brighter, the color is cleaner, and the glow is even along the whole run of tube.
Colored tube, and what it costs you
Colored tube exists. The silicone itself is tinted, so switched off the lettering keeps its own color instead of going white. A Hot Pink sign reads pink. It reads as a flat, printed-looking color rather than a glow.
- ✓ Unlit the wording is still readable and still in your color.
- ✗ Lit it is noticeably dimmer, because the tint costs translucency. Deep Blue and Deep Green suffer most.
That trade off is the whole reason white is our default rather than a choice we push at checkout. If you specifically need the lettering readable while switched off, colored tube is available on request. Ask for a quote and name the color.
The backboard matters more than most people expect
The board behind the tubing is the other half of the unlit picture, and it is the part buyers usually decide by accident because clear is the default.

How the cut changes it too
Cut to Sign Outline and Cut to Letter Shape both remove most of the board, so an unlit sign is mostly tubing. Cut to Rectangle leaves a full panel. No Backboard leaves the tubing alone on its mounts, which is the cleanest unlit look and also the most fragile.
Choosing, in one paragraph
If the sign is for a party, a photo backdrop, or a room where it is on whenever you are in it, take the default: white tube on clear acrylic. If it lives somewhere visible all day, a reception desk or a bar back or a bedroom wall you see every morning, spend the same money on a mirror or brushed board instead.
Most buyers choose the backboard for how the sign looks lit, in a photograph, on a screen. That is the state it will be in for perhaps a fifth of the time it owns your wall. Choose the board for the other four fifths and you will not regret it, because the lit sign looks good on every finish anyway.

What color is an LED neon sign when it is switched off?
Frosted white, whatever color it glows when lit. Which backboard looks best when the sign is switched off?
Mirror and brushed finishes, by a distance, because they remain a decorative object rather than a blank. Gold, rose gold and brushed silver are the most used for this reason. Is real glass neon also white when it is off?
No. Real glass neon is a clear glass tube, so unlit it looks like clear glass rather than frosted white, and you can often see the electrodes and the internal coating. It is a different object from an LED neon sign in almost every respect. See real glass neon versus LED neon.
How much of the time is a neon sign actually switched off?
More than people expect. A domestic sign that is on for five or six hours in the evening is unlit for roughly three quarters of the day, and a business sign that runs during opening hours only is unlit for over half of it. That is the practical argument for choosing a backboard finish that still looks like something with the power off.
