Custom open face channel letters, with the lighting left visible

Open face letters leave the lighting exposed at the front instead of hiding it behind an acrylic face. The sign reads as a lit outline rather than a lit panel, which is why it suits bars, salons, barbershops and anywhere the sign should look made rather than manufactured. Send a logo and a wall width and you get back dimensioned shop drawings and a written price.

The decision that matters most here is the finish of the metal, not the lighting. The same letters are built in gloss and matte colours, in brushed and frosted golds, and in genuinely oxidised rust finishes that keep developing after installation. Script designs are fabricated as connected letterforms rather than separate characters, which changes both the pattern and the mounting. Colour-changing RGB lighting is available where one look is not enough.

Every set is fabricated for one customer, so nothing in this grid is a stock letter set. There are no design, artwork or revision fees, and no cap on revisions before you approve the drawings.

Opening on a fixed date? Check it before you design

Storefront signage misses deadlines for one reason more than any other: the permit, not the fabrication. Tell us the date you need to be lit and we will tell you honestly whether it fits.

  • Fabrication and shipping runs up to 30 days from drawing approval
  • Permit review is set by your municipality and commonly adds several weeks
  • Landlord sign criteria approval happens before either of those
  • Installation has to be booked, and is not included

Permit timelines are set by your municipality and are outside our control, so treat this as a planning guide rather than a commitment.

Buying guide

Four decisions before you order

The questions that actually change the drawing, answered before you have to ask.

The finish is the decision

On an open face letter the metal stays visible, so the finish carries the whole look rather than sitting behind a lit face. Gloss and matte colours read current and deliberate. Brushed and frosted golds read expensive. Oxidised rust keeps developing after it goes up and suits a venue that wants to look older than it is.

Script or separate letters

Script designs are fabricated as one connected form rather than individual characters. That changes the pattern, the mounting and how the sign ships. Separate block letters mount as individual cans and give you more control over spacing on the wall.

How tall the letters need to be

Letter height follows viewing distance, not wall width. For a sign facing the viewer, roughly 30 feet of readable distance per inch of letter height is the working figure. The one-inch-per-ten-feet rule quoted elsewhere is the harsher index for signs mounted flat alongside passing traffic, and applying it everywhere makes every storefront sound like it needs letters three times taller than it does.

Flush mount or raceway

Flush mounting fixes each letter to the facade individually and looks cleanest. A raceway carries the letters on a single bar, which many landlords require because it means one set of penetrations in the wall rather than dozens. The sign criteria usually settle this before you get a say.

FAQ

Open face letter questions

Can I see it before you build it?

Yes, and nothing is fabricated until you approve. Send a logo or the wording with a rough wall width, and a designer returns dimensioned shop drawings and a firm price. The drawings cost nothing, there is no cap on revisions before you approve, and those same drawings are what a permit application and an installer both need.

Do I need a permit?

Exterior illuminated signage needs a permit in most municipalities, and that review commonly takes longer than building the letters does. A landlord written approval is not a substitute for one. The order that saves the most time is: get the sign criteria first, design to them second, file the permit third.

How long does it take?

Fabrication and shipping run up to 30 days from the moment you approve the drawings. Permit review and landlord approval both happen before that and are set by other people, so build them into your date rather than counting back from the fabrication time alone.

Is installation included?

No. Installation is booked separately with a local installer, and it needs to be scheduled rather than assumed. The dimensioned shop drawings supplied with your quote are exactly what that installer will ask for.

What does the warranty cover?

Two years, covering free repair rather than replacement. Because every set is fabricated for one customer there is no equivalent unit sitting in stock to swap in, so a fault is repaired rather than exchanged.

Can I change the design after I approve it?

Revisions are free and unlimited before approval, so the time to be difficult is at the drawing stage. Once you approve, the letters go into fabrication and a change means starting the set again. That is the whole reason the proof comes first.

What open face channel letters are

An open face letter is built as a metal can with the lighting left visible at the front, rather than covered by a translucent acrylic face. You see the light source itself as a bright line following the shape of the letter, with the metal return forming a visible edge around it. It is the look most people picture when they think of an old bar sign, and it is deliberately less uniform than a modern front-lit letter.

When to choose open face over front-lit

Front-lit letters put an even glow across the whole face and carry further down a street, which makes them the safer choice when the sign has to be read from a moving car. Open face letters trade some of that distance legibility for character. They work best where the viewer is close and on foot: a bar front, a salon, a barbershop, the wall behind a reception desk, an interior feature wall.

The finish is the real decision

Because the metal stays visible rather than hidden behind a lit face, the finish does more work here than on any other letter type. Gloss and matte colours read as deliberate and current. Brushed and frosted golds read as expensive. Oxidised rust finishes keep changing after installation and suit venues that want to look older than they are.

Before you order

If the sign is going on a leased storefront, get the landlord or centre sign criteria before anything is drawn, because they often fix letter height and lighting type before you have a say. Exterior illuminated signage also needs a permit in most municipalities, and that review commonly takes longer than the fabrication does.
