What is a custom animated neon sign?
Get a Free Mockup & Quote →A custom animated neon sign is an LED neon sign split into separately wired sections, so parts of it switch on and off in sequence and the light appears to flash or move. The remote sets the mode, the speed and the brightness.

Color options
18 tube colors, plus RGB color changing and two-color gradient. Every color below is a real tube we stock, sampled from the factory swatch. Pick one color for the whole sign, mix colors line by line, or choose RGB and change it from the remote. Two-color gradients are made to order and quoted individually.
Gradient color-changing: pick any two
Any pair of the 18 tube colors, blended across your sign. Built to order, so it is quoted rather than priced online. Pick your two and we will come back with a mockup and a firm price.
Screen colors vary slightly from the physical light. Ask for a photo of the exact tube before you approve your proof and we will send one.
Sizes and prices
Width is the number you order by. Tap a width to see it at true scale against an adult of average height (5′8″), and roughly how much wording fits on one line.

Height depends on your wording and how many lines it breaks into. The figure shows a single-line sign. Letter counts are a guide: a cursive font with long descenders fits fewer characters than a block font.
Minimum letter height is 2″ (5 cm). Below that the tube cannot be bent cleanly, so very long wording needs a wider sign or a second line.
Backboard options
Every sign is mounted on an acrylic backboard. You choose how it is cut and what it is made of. Those are the two decisions that change how the sign reads when it is switched off.
Backboard shapes
Backboard colors and materials
Twelve finishes we keep in stock, and any other color can be made to order. Mirror and brushed boards stay decorative when the sign is off, which is most of the time it is on your wall.
How it looks switched off
A sign spends most of its life switched off. On the standard clear board the acrylic all but disappears and you are left with frosted white tubing on your wall. That is what most people get. If you would rather it still read as an object when off, that is what the mirror and brushed finishes are for. And if you want the lettering or graphic to keep its own color while the sign is off, ask for colored tube instead of the standard white.
Why the tubing is white when the sign is off
We build with white silicone tube by default because it is the most translucent material we can bend. Lit, it gives the brightest and most even glow. That is why an unlit sign reads as white lettering whatever color it glows, unless you ask for colored tube.
Colored tube is available on request. The silicone itself is tinted, so switched off the lettering keeps its own color. A Hot Pink sign reads pink rather than white. It reads as a flat, printed-looking color, not a glow. The trade-off is real and worth saying plainly: colored tube is noticeably less bright when lit, because the tint costs translucency. That is the whole reason white is our default rather than a choice we push at checkout.

How to order
Nothing is built until you have seen it drawn and said yes. Three steps, and the one that is in your hands is the middle one.
Working to a date? Tell us the real date, not the deadline you think we need. If it is tight we will say so before you pay.
Warranty
Two years of free repairs, done by the people who built your sign. Nearly every fault is a connector or a driver, parts we make and keep in stock, so a fix is quick and it costs you nothing.
Signs are made to order, so a repair needs the order number to match the build file. Keep the order email and the rest is on us.
About AOOS
We have been making neon since 1998. We are the people who build the sign, not a storefront reselling someone else’s. That changes three practical things.
No reseller margin sitting on top, and the quote you approve is what you pay. Sizes and upcharges are published on this page rather than worked out after you enquire.
No design fee, no artwork fee, no charge to change your mind. Redraw it as many times as you need before you approve, because the drawing is done by the same team that builds it.
Two color gradients, colored tube, a shape nobody stocks. We can tell you what is possible and what it costs, because it is our production line answering.
The designer above prices the sign itself. The motion is quoted by hand. Send your wording or your logo and tell us what should move. A designer comes back with a drawing, the effect we would build, and a firm price.

LED neon vs real glass
Is this real neon? Strictly, no. Real neon is gas inside hand bent glass, and we make that too. LED neon is a different medium with a different set of strengths. Neither is the better product, they are better at different jobs, and knowing which is which is the whole point of this page.
| LED neon | Real glass neon | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Flexible LED tubing on an acrylic board | Glass tube bent by hand and filled with gas |
| The light | Even and continuous along the run | Slight depth and movement that LED does not copy |
| Power | Low voltage 12V DC | High voltage transformer |
| Heat | Barely warm, safe against fabric and florals | Runs warm, needs air around it |
| If it is knocked | Bends rather than shatters | Glass, and a break needs a workshop |
| Color | 18 tube colors, RGB, dimmable | Gas and phosphor color, no color change |
| Travels | Yes, and runs on batteries | Better installed once and left |
| Made by | Formed tube, repeatable | A bender, by hand, one piece at a time |
It travels, hangs near fabric, needs to be dimmed or change color, goes in a child’s room, or has to survive being packed and rebuilt. Weddings, homes, storefront interiors, event hire.
The sign is the object. A bar, a gallery, a restaurant, a collector piece, a brand that wants the actual craft rather than an impression of it. It is installed once and looked at for years.
Which is why this comparison is not a sales pitch for one of them. Tell us the room and the job and we will say which we would build, including when that is the cheaper one.

Which animated neon sign is right for you?
Movement is what makes a sign win against a busy background, which is why these end up at trade shows, pop-ups, bars, game rooms and stage sets far more often than in quiet rooms.
Types of custom LED neon signs
All built on the same LED neon flex as our standard signs. What changes is how the sign is divided up and the order the sections fire in.

From $169.99Custom animated neon signs: your questions answered
How much does a custom animated neon sign cost?
Custom animated neon signs start at $169.99. The price scales with the width of the sign, how many letters or shapes it contains, and how many separately controlled sections the effect needs. Send your wording and a rough size and we'll come back with a firm price and a free mockup.
What kind of animation can an LED neon sign actually do?
The sign is split into sections and each section is wired to its own channel, so the sections can switch on and off in a set order. That covers flashing, and movement that runs across the sign in a sequence or pattern. It is stepped motion between fixed sections, not smooth video or scrolling text.
How is the animation controlled?
By remote. You can switch between effect modes, change how fast the sequence runs, dim the sign, and turn it on and off from across the room. Slower transitions suit ambient lighting; fast flashing suits a busy room where the sign has to compete for attention.
Can I turn the animation off and just leave it lit?
Yes. The remote includes a steady-on mode, so the same sign works as an ordinary lit sign when you don't want movement. Brightness is adjustable in that mode too.
Can an animated neon sign run on batteries?
Yes. Small animated signs run on 8 AA batteries, which typically gives 4 to 5 hours, or 6 to 10 hours with a spare set. Larger signs use a portable 12V power station, which will run for days depending on its capacity. This is how a sign works at a venue that won't allow cables across the floor.
Will I receive a design proof before my animated sign is made?
Yes. You receive a design proof showing layout, dimensions, color and how the sequence is split across the sign, and production only begins after you approve it. Nothing is built and no deposit is taken before that.
How long does it take to make a custom animated neon sign?
In most cases express delivery takes 7 to 12 days and free shipping 18 to 25 days, both counted from the day you approve the drawing. Large or complex pieces, including ones with many separately controlled sections, sit at the top of that range.
Do animated neon signs use more power or wear out faster?
No. They run on the same low-voltage 12V LED neon flex as our standard signs and produce very little heat. Sections that switch on and off are drawing power for less of the time, not more. The 2 year warranty with free repair covers them exactly the same way.
Can I use an animated neon sign outdoors?
Standard signs are made for indoor use. For an exterior or semi-exposed location we build a weatherproof IP67 version with sealed wiring and an outdoor-rated power supply. Tell us where it's going and we'll spec it in the quote.
Can I upload my own logo for an animated sign?
Yes, JPG, PNG, PDF or AI. We'll turn it into a neon mockup and tell you which parts of it can be sequenced, because a logo has to break into distinct shapes for the movement to read clearly. You approve the mockup before anything is built.
What's the difference between an animated sign and an RGB color changing one?
An RGB sign changes the color of the whole sign at once; an animated sign switches separate sections on and off in sequence, so the light appears to move. They solve different problems: RGB is about mood, animation is about catching the eye. Tell us which effect you're after and we'll quote the right build.
Custom animated neon signs, handcrafted by a direct manufacturer since 1998
AOOS Custom® makes custom animated neon signs in our own factory. The sign is built from flexible LED neon on a cut-to-shape acrylic backboard, then divided into separately wired sections so the light can flash or run across it in sequence. Effect mode, speed and brightness are set from the remote, and the same sign switches to steady-on when you want it still.
Three ways to order
You can design it online, entering your text and picking a font, color and size in a few seconds; you can send us your wording or logo and get a free mockup back with the animation planned out; or you can email service@aoos.com. Nothing is produced until you approve the proof.
What people put on them
Brand names and logos on a trade show stand, a bar or game room sign where the movement does the work a static sign can't, arrows and pointers that lead people somewhere, and event signage that has to hold attention in a crowded hall. Anything that reads as a set of distinct shapes animates well.
Business and storefront signage
For exterior and permit-sensitive installations, see our open-face channel letters and custom channel letters, which are built for outdoor mounting.
