What is a battery powered neon sign?
Get a Free Mockup & Quote →A battery powered neon sign is a made-to-order LED sign that runs without a wall socket. Eight AA cells sit in a slim box on the back of the board, and the sign lights for four to five hours on a set. Choose an opaque backboard and the box is hidden behind it; on clear acrylic it is visible from the front. The same sign still takes a plug-in adapter when there is an outlet nearby.

Battery run time
Same sign, three power sources. Which one you use is a decision you make on the day, not at the time of order.
One set of AA batteries, or a USB power bank, gives the same 4 to 5 hours. Swap in a fresh set for another 4 to 5. It takes a minute, so a long event is a question of how many spares you bring.
Plugged into the 12V output of an outdoor power station, the sign stays lit for days rather than hours. This is the answer for a weekend market, a multi-day trade show or a venue with no power at all.
For a sign that lives on one wall in a shop, studio or home and stays lit every day.
Any size we build can run without mains power. Larger signs are fitted with an additional battery box to carry the extra load, so the size of your sign never decides whether cordless is possible.
Garden ceremonies, rooftops, market stalls, food trucks and campsites. The places with no outlet are exactly the places this exists for.
The battery box mounts on the back panel. On a flower wall or a fabric backdrop there is no cable running away from the sign and nothing to hide.
Cordless or plug-in
You are not choosing between two products. The battery box mounts on the back panel and you switch power source whenever the situation changes.
Run it cordless when
- ✓There is no outlet where the sign has to go
- ✓A visible cord would ruin the shot, on a flower wall or backdrop
- ✓The sign moves during the day, ceremony then reception
- ✓It is a market stall, a rooftop, a campsite or a trade-show booth
Plug it in when
- ✓It stays lit all day, every day, in a shop or studio
- ✓It is mounted somewhere you would rather not reach again
- ✓There is an outlet and no reason to carry batteries

Battery questions
How long does a battery powered neon sign stay lit?
A set of 8 AA batteries runs the sign for four to five hours, and a USB power bank gives the same four to five. When a set runs down you swap in a fresh one and get another four to five, so a long event is a question of how many spares you bring. Run the same sign from the 12V output of an outdoor power station instead and it stays lit for days.
What if my event runs longer than five hours?
Two options, and both use the same sign. Bring spare sets of AA batteries, since each fresh set adds another four to five hours and swaps over in a minute. Or run it from the 12V output of an outdoor power station, which is measured in days rather than hours and is what we would suggest for a weekend market or a multi-day show.
Is there a size limit on a cordless sign?
No. Any size we build can run without mains power. Larger signs are fitted with an additional battery box to carry the extra load, so the size of your sign never decides whether cordless is possible.
Can a battery powered neon sign be used outdoors?
Yes. Garden ceremonies, rooftop parties, market stalls, food trucks and pop-up stands are exactly the situations cordless power exists for, because they are the places with no outlet.
Can I switch between battery and plug-in power?
Yes, on the same sign. The battery box is mounted on the back panel, so you choose the power source to suit the situation rather than committing to one at the time of order.
Where do the batteries sit, and will they show?
The battery box mounts on the back panel, behind the sign, so nothing is visible from the front. That is the whole point of a cordless sign, on a flower wall or a fabric backdrop there is no cable running away from it and nothing to hide.
Do the batteries come with the sign?
No. Eight AA cells are easy to buy anywhere and they would add weight and cost to the shipment, so the sign arrives with the box fitted and empty. Use alkaline cells rather than rechargeables for the longest run.
Can I dim a battery powered sign, and does dimming save power?
Yes to both. The dimmer is included, and running at half brightness noticeably extends the time you get from one set of cells. For a long event, start lower than you think you need.
Will the battery box show from the front?
Not on an opaque backboard. The box sits on the back of the board, so a black, white, mirror or brushed finish hides it completely. On clear acrylic it is visible through the board, so choose an opaque finish if that matters to you.
How heavy is a cordless sign?
About 1.45 lb per square foot of acrylic plus around 15% for the tube and wiring, and the battery box and cells add a few ounces. A 35 x 18 in sign works out around 8 lb, which any normal wall anchor handles.
Can I hang it on a flower wall or a fabric backdrop?
Yes, and this is the reason most people choose cordless. The mounting kit works on artificial flower walls, greenery panels, fabric and vinyl backdrops. With no cable to run, the sign can go in the middle of a backdrop rather than at the edge nearest a socket.
Can it stand on a table instead of hanging?
Yes. Ask for the freestanding base and the sign stands on its own on a welcome desk, a bar or the floor. No drilling and nothing to hang it from.
How many spare sets should I bring for an event?
Work back from the hours you need. One set covers four to five hours on a 50 to 60 cm sign, so an eight hour reception wants two sets, and a full day wants three. Spare cells cost less than a bigger battery pack and swap in seconds.
Can I run it from a USB power bank instead?
Yes, and it is worth telling us at order time so we supply a connector suited to a power bank rather than only the mains adapter. A 10,000 mAh bank gives roughly the same as one set of AA cells.
Is a cordless sign bright enough for daylight?
It is the same tube and the same brightness as a plug-in sign, so it reads well indoors and at dusk. In direct sunlight any neon-style sign washes out, cordless or not, so plan outdoor daytime signs for shade or for the evening.
What happens when the batteries run down?
The sign dims gradually rather than cutting out, which gives you warning. Swap the set and it returns to full brightness immediately.
Can a large sign run on batteries?
Yes, there is no size limit. Larger signs draw more, so they either run for less time on one set or use a bigger box, and above a certain size we fit more than one. Tell us the size and we will tell you the realistic run time before you order.
Can I use it outdoors in the rain?
Ask for the weatherproof IP67 build. Bear in mind the rating covers the sign: your battery pack or power bank needs its own protection, so keep it under cover.
How long does a cordless sign take to make?
The same as any custom sign: 7 to 12 days express, or 18 to 25 days with free shipping, both counted from the day you approve the drawing rather than the day you order.
Is a battery sign more expensive than a plug-in one?
No. It is the same sign with a battery box fitted on the back, and it still accepts the plug-in adapter. You are not paying for a second product.
