Real glass neon is hand-bent glass tubing filled with a noble gas and energised by a transformer. The light comes from the gas itself, which is why it has a depth and a softness that a lit plastic surface cannot reproduce.
It is heavier, more fragile and more expensive than LED neon. It is also repairable rather than disposable, and it is the only version of this product that is actually neon.
The definition, precisely
That last point is the one worth holding on to. In an LED sign, a component produces light and a plastic tube spreads it. In a glass neon sign, the tube is the light source. Nothing is in front of the glow, which is why the colour reads as continuous rather than as a lit surface.
How a tube becomes a letter
The process has not changed much in a century, which is both its charm and its cost.
- The pattern. The design is drawn full size and reversed, because the bender works from behind the glass.
- Bending. Straight lengths of tubing are heated over burners until the glass softens, then bent by hand against the pattern. The bender blows gently into the tube while shaping it to stop the walls collapsing at the curve.
- Electrodes. An electrode is fused into each end and the tube is sealed.
- Bombarding. Air is pumped out and a heavy current is run through the tube to heat it and drive out impurities. This step is why a well made tube lasts and a poorly made one does not.
- Filling. A measured quantity of gas is admitted at low pressure and the tube is sealed for good.
- Ageing. The finished tube is run for a period to stabilise it before it goes anywhere near a customer.
Every bend is a hand judgement, which is why no two glass signs are identical even from the same drawing, and why the work is priced as skilled labour rather than as production.
Where the colours actually come from
This is the most commonly misunderstood part of the product, and the answer is more interesting than most people expect.
So a sign described as "neon" in green or pink is almost certainly argon in a coated tube. This is not a cheat, it is how the medium has always worked. But it explains two things buyers notice: why reds and oranges look so effortless in glass, and why the palette is a fixed set of real tubes rather than a colour picker.
It also explains a practical difference from LED. A glass tube is one colour, permanently. There is no colour changing, no remote, no dimming to a different hue. If you want the sign to change colour, you want LED neon, and that is a legitimate reason to choose it.
Why it needs a transformer
Glass neon runs at high voltage. A transformer steps mains power up to the level needed to strike and sustain the gas, and the high voltage side is carried on cable rated for it.
This is the single biggest practical difference from LED neon, which on our signs runs at 12V DC. It affects installation, servicing and where the sign can reasonably go. A glass sign is not something to rewire casually, and it is not a good candidate for a location where the wiring will be handled by whoever happens to be around.
The high voltage is not a reason to avoid glass, it is a reason to be honest about the installation. For a bar, a restaurant, a gallery or a collector's wall, where the piece is installed once and left alone, it is a non-issue. For a sign that will be moved, shipped between events, or handled by non-specialists, LED is genuinely the better tool and we will tell you so.
Repairable, not disposable
A glass neon sign does not usually fail the way an electronic product fails. The common end states are a cracked tube, a leak at a seal, or an electrode reaching the end of its life. All three are repairs rather than write-offs: a section can be re-bent, re-fitted and re-filled, and the rest of the sign carries on.
This is a real difference in ownership. A well maintained glass sign is a decades-long object, and the vintage neon market exists precisely because these things can be brought back. That is not a claim LED can make in the same way, and it is part of why glass costs what it costs.
Should you be looking at LED instead?
Often, yes, and it is worth saying so plainly on a page about glass.
- ✓ Choose glass when the authenticity of the medium is part of the point: hospitality, art, collections, statement pieces, anything where people will look at it closely.
- ✗ Choose LED when the sign must travel, hang in a home, change colour, run on low voltage, survive shipping without special handling, or come in at a lower budget.
