How Much Does a Custom Neon Sign Cost?

Custom LED neon signs start at $139.99 in your own wording, or $239.99 built from your logo, and rise with size, which outweighs every other factor by a wide margin. After size: backboard type, the outdoor build at plus 25 percent, and word count. Anyone quoting a flat per-letter rate without seeing your design is guessing.

An LED neon sign held in two hands to show its real size
Short answer

Custom LED neon signs start at 139.99 USD for a small sign in your own wording, or 239.99 USD if we build it from your logo, and rise with size. Size is the dominant factor by a wide margin. After that, in rough order of impact: number of colors, backboard type, whether it is built for outdoor use, and word count.

Anyone quoting a flat per-letter or per-foot rate without seeing your design is guessing. Send the wording and dimensions and you get a real number, usually within 30 minutes to 3 hours.

Size drives almost everything

A custom sign is priced on the tube run and the backboard area it takes to build your design at the size you want. Both scale with dimensions, which is why a sign twice as wide is not twice the price but considerably more than twice the material.

Our custom LED range runs from 139.99 USD for a small interior piece up to several thousand for large multi-color work. That spread is almost entirely size.

Practical consequence: if the quote comes back higher than you expected, the first lever is not to remove a color or change the backboard. It is to reconsider the dimensions. Nothing else moves the number as much. The sizing guide covers how to arrive at a size you will not regret, and why undersizing is the more common error.

Word count is a size decision in disguise

More words means either a wider sign or smaller letters. Since our minimum letter height is 5 cm, set by what a 6 mm tube can hold as a clean letterform, past a certain point smaller letters stop being an option and the sign simply has to get bigger.

So the cheapest way to control cost on a phrase is usually to stack it onto more lines rather than to shrink it. A stacked block grows in height rather than width, keeps every letter buildable, and often looks better on an interior wall than a long banner.

Colors

We do not charge per color. Each extra color is a separate run of tube and so it costs us fabrication time, but that is absorbed rather than billed: a two color or multi color sign is priced the same as the same design in one color. Pick the colors the design needs.

Color changing is a different thing again: rather than more tube, it is different tube plus a controller, and it is priced as an option rather than per color. Whether it is worth it depends entirely on the room, and it is not always the upgrade people expect.

Backboard type

The acrylic behind the tube is a real cost input, and the choice changes both price and appearance.

  • Rectangle or standard shape. Least cutting, lowest cost, most visible acrylic.
  • Cut to shape. The backing follows the outline of the design. More cutting, higher cost, and the sign reads as floating text rather than as a panel.
  • No backboard. Individual letters mounted directly. The most involved to fabricate and install.

The full set of options is on the backboard shape options page. Worth choosing before dimensions are fixed, because the backing is included in the quoted overall size.

Outdoor adds real cost, and it is not optional later

An exterior sign needs sealed construction, a suitable power supply and weather-rated connections. Ours are built and tested to IP67 and we can supply the test report.

Our take

Say "outdoor" at quote stage even if you are only considering it. An indoor sign cannot be upgraded to outdoor afterwards in any meaningful sense, and drilling or extending the cable entry on a finished sign defeats the sealing it does have. The cost difference at quote stage is far smaller than the cost of buying the wrong one.

Three ways to bring the number down, in order of how much they help

  1. Reduce the overall size, or stack the text. This is the only lever with large effect. Everything below is marginal by comparison.
  2. Drop to one color. Often improves the design as well, particularly for a script.
  3. Take a standard backboard shape instead of cut to shape. Smaller saving, and it does change how the sign reads on the wall.

What we would not suggest: cutting the size below what the viewing distance needs. That saves money on a sign you end up replacing.

Getting a real number

Pricing a custom sign properly needs the wording or artwork, the overall dimensions, the number of colors and whether it goes indoors or out. With those we come back with a written price, usually within 30 minutes to 3 hours, and there is no limit on revisions before you approve.

If you would rather see the price move as you make choices, the sign designer starts at 139.99 USD and prices as you type. For anything logo-based or unusual, send it for a quote instead, since artwork needs a person to look at it.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a custom LED neon sign cost?

Custom LED neon signs start at 139.99 USD for a small interior piece in your own wording, 239.99 USD when we build it from your logo, and rise into the thousands for large multi-color work. Size is by far the dominant factor, followed by the backboard type and whether the sign is built for outdoor use. Send the wording and dimensions for a written price.

Why do custom neon signs vary so much in price?

Because a custom sign is priced on the tube run and backboard area needed to build your specific design at your chosen size, rather than on a fixed unit. A short name at 12 inches wide and a stacked phrase at 48 inches are different amounts of material and fabrication, which is why any supplier quoting a flat rate without seeing the design is estimating rather than pricing.

Does adding more colors cost more?

Yes. Each color is a separate run of tube, so it adds fabrication time. One color is the baseline and two is a modest step, with the increments adding up beyond that. Color changing is priced differently again, as an option rather than per color, because it uses different tube and a controller. You can watch what each choice does to the price in the sign designer.

Is an outdoor neon sign more expensive?

Yes, because it needs sealed construction, a suitable power supply and weather-rated connections. Ours are built and tested to IP67. Say outdoor at quote stage even if you are only considering it, because an indoor sign cannot meaningfully be upgraded afterwards and modifying the cable entry defeats whatever sealing it has. If it is going on a commercial building, check whether the sign needs a permit first, since that can limit the size you are allowed to fit.

What is the cheapest way to reduce the price of a custom sign?

Reduce the overall size, or stack a long phrase onto more lines so it grows in height rather than width. Size dominates the number, so this is the only change with a large effect. Dropping to a single color helps next, and a standard backboard shape rather than cut to shape saves a little more. Cutting the size below what your viewing distance needs is a false economy.

Do I have to pay before seeing the design?

No. The mockup comes first and it is free, usually back within 30 minutes to 3 hours, and there is no limit on how many revisions you can request before you approve. Payment comes after you are happy with the design.
