Halo backlit letters, and the wall that has to earn them

A solid metal face with the light thrown backwards onto the wall, so the letter reads as a silhouette floating in a glow with no visible source. It is the most understated of the four channel letter constructions and the one that photographs best. It is also the one most dependent on what is behind it. Send a logo and a photo of the actual wall and you get back dimensioned shop drawings and a written price.

The glow lands on the surface behind the letters, which means that surface becomes part of the sign whether you intended it or not. Clean plaster, flat stone and brushed metal look excellent. Rough brick, patterned tile, or a wall with a downpipe running through it means paying to light up the building's flaws. We would rather tell you that before drawing than after installing.

The letters sit off the wall on standoffs, commonly 1 to 1.5 inches and sometimes up to 2, and that distance is a real design lever: shorter gives a tighter brighter halo, longer gives a softer wider one. Because the sign projects from the wall by that amount, a projection limit in your lease can decide it for you. Interior lobby work usually avoids the permit process that exterior signage triggers, so those projects move considerably faster.

Opening on a fixed date? Check it before you design

Exterior signage misses deadlines because of the permit, not the fabrication. Interior lobby signs usually skip that step entirely. Tell us the date you need to be lit and we will tell you honestly whether it fits.

  • Fabrication and shipping runs up to 30 days from drawing approval
  • Exterior work needs a permit; interior lobby signs usually do not
  • Landlord sign criteria approval happens before either of those
  • Installation has to be booked, and is not included

Permit timelines are set by your municipality and are outside our control, so treat this as a planning guide rather than a commitment.

Buying guide

Four decisions before you order

The first one eliminates halo more often than budget does.

Halo only works if the wall works

The glow lands on the surface behind the letters, so that surface becomes part of the sign. Clean plaster, flat stone and brushed metal all look excellent. Rough brick, busy tile, or a wall with a downpipe running through it means you have spent a lot of money lighting up your building's flaws. This rules out halo more often than budget does.

Standoff distance is a design lever

The letters sit off the wall on standoffs, commonly around 1 to 1.5 inches and sometimes up to 2. Shorter gives a tighter, brighter halo. Longer gives a softer, wider, dimmer one. It also means the sign projects from the wall, so check your landlord projection limit before the distance is fixed on a drawing.

It reads worst at distance

A halo letter is a silhouette floating in a glow, with no lit face to carry across a car park. That is exactly why it looks expensive up close and disappoints from the road. Lobbies, reception walls, clinics and studios are where it belongs. If people need to read your name from a moving car, front-lit is the safer build.

The permit takes longer than the build

Fabrication and shipping run up to 30 days from drawing approval. Permit review is set by your municipality and commonly adds several weeks, and landlord approval happens before either. Interior lobby signs often skip the permit entirely, which is one practical advantage of halo work that lives indoors.

FAQ

Halo backlit letter questions

What is a halo lit or reverse lit letter?

A letter with a solid opaque face and an open back. The light is thrown backwards onto the wall, so the letter reads as a silhouette floating in a glow with no visible light source. The letters sit off the wall on standoffs, commonly around 1 to 1.5 inches. It is the most understated of the four channel letter constructions and the one that photographs best.

Will halo lighting work on my wall?

Only if the wall is clean and reasonably flat, because the glow lands on it and makes it part of the sign. Plaster, flat stone, painted board and brushed metal all work. Rough brick, patterned tile, and any wall with pipework or expansion joints running through it will show every flaw once the light hits. Send a photo of the actual wall with your enquiry and we will tell you honestly whether halo suits it.

Halo or front-lit?

Halo looks more expensive and reads worse at distance; front-lit reads furthest and looks neutral. The deciding question is how far away your customer is when they need to read it. Across a car park or from a moving car points to front-lit. At the door, in a lobby, or already inside points to halo. The two are set side by side in our guide to channel letter types.

How far off the wall do the letters sit?

Commonly 1 to 1.5 inches, sometimes up to 2. It is a design decision rather than a fixed spec: a shorter standoff gives a tighter and brighter halo, a longer one gives a softer and wider glow. Because the sign projects from the wall by that amount, a projection limit in your lease or sign criteria can decide it for you.

Is this suitable for an indoor lobby sign?

It is arguably where halo belongs. A reception wall is close-range, usually clean and flat, and controlled for light, which is exactly the situation halo was designed for. Interior signs also commonly avoid the permit process that exterior illuminated signage triggers, so a lobby project often moves considerably faster than a storefront one.

What finishes are available for the letter faces?

Because the face is solid rather than lit, the finish does more work here than on a front-lit letter: it is what people see during the day. Brushed and mirror stainless, polished and brushed golds, painted matte colours and bronze finishes are all standard. Send your brand reference at the quote stage and the drawings will come back with the finish specified.

Halo lit and backlit channel letters

A halo lit letter, also called reverse lit or backlit, has a solid opaque face and an open back. Light is thrown backwards onto the wall so the letter reads as a dark silhouette sitting inside a glow, with no visible light source anywhere. It is the construction that looks most expensive in a photograph, and the one most likely to disappoint if it is specified for the wrong position.

The wall is half the sign

This is the part worth being blunt about. Because the glow lands on the surface behind the letters, that surface is doing as much work as the letters themselves. A clean plaster reception wall or a flat stone facade gives you the effect you have seen in photographs. Rough brick, busy tile, or a wall interrupted by a downpipe or an expansion joint gives you an expensive light shining on your building's flaws. Send a photo of the actual wall before anything is drawn.

Standoff distance and what it changes

The letters are held off the wall on standoffs, commonly 1 to 1.5 inches and sometimes up to 2. A shorter standoff produces a tighter, brighter halo; a longer one produces a softer, wider, dimmer glow. It is a genuine design decision rather than a detail, and it also determines how far the sign projects, which a lease or a set of tenant sign criteria may cap independently of what looks best.

Where halo belongs, and where it does not

Lobbies, reception walls, clinics, studios and any close-range position where the viewer is on foot. It is the weakest of the four constructions at distance, because there is no lit face to carry across a car park, so a sign that has to be read from the road is better built front-lit. The four types are set side by side in our guide to channel letter types.
