Halo backlit letters, and the wall that has to earn them

A letter with a solid opaque face and an open back. The light is thrown backwards onto the wall, so the letter reads as a silhouette floating in a glow with no visible light source. The letters sit off the wall on standoffs, commonly around 1 to 1.5 inches. It is the most understated of the four channel letter constructions and the one that photographs best.

Only if the wall is clean and reasonably flat, because the glow lands on it and makes it part of the sign. Plaster, flat stone, painted board and brushed metal all work. Rough brick, patterned tile, and any wall with pipework or expansion joints running through it will show every flaw once the light hits. Halo looks more expensive and reads worse at distance; front-lit reads furthest and looks neutral. The deciding question is how far away your customer is when they need to read it. Across a car park or from a moving car points to front-lit. At the door, in a lobby, or already inside points to halo. The two are set side by side in our guide to channel letter types.

Commonly 1 to 1.5 inches, sometimes up to 2. It is a design decision rather than a fixed spec: a shorter standoff gives a tighter and brighter halo, a longer one gives a softer and wider glow. Because the sign projects from the wall by that amount, a projection limit in your lease or sign criteria can decide it for you.

It is arguably where halo belongs. A reception wall is close-range, usually clean and flat, and controlled for light, which is exactly the situation halo was designed for. Interior signs also commonly avoid the permit process that exterior illuminated signage triggers, so a lobby project often moves considerably faster than a storefront one.

Because the face is solid rather than lit, the finish does more work here than on a front-lit letter: it is what people see during the day. Brushed and mirror stainless, polished and brushed golds, painted matte colours and bronze finishes are all standard.
